Naturalization Interview Day: What to Expect (Civics, English, and Your N-400)

Interview day is when USCIS reviews your Form N-400, checks that you still meet the requirements, and — for most applicants — gives the English and civics tests. This guide is a practical checklist based on public USCIS materials (Study for the Test, Check for Test Updates, and exceptions and accommodations). It is not legal advice and does not invent fees, wait times, or local field-office quirks.

Before you leave home

  1. Read your appointment notice — date, time, address, and any document list USCIS printed for you.
  2. Bring what USCIS told you to bring — typically your green card (Permanent Resident Card), a government photo ID, and any documents your notice or interview letter lists (originals and copies as instructed). Follow the notice for your case; do not substitute guesswork for the official list.
  3. Arrive early and plan for security — field offices have screening; give yourself a buffer.

What happens in the interview room

A USCIS officer places you under oath and goes through your N-400 — identity, residence, travel, marital history, children, good moral character questions, and other eligibility items as they apply to you. Answer truthfully and briefly. If you do not understand a question, ask the officer to repeat or rephrase it.

For most applicants, the officer also tests:

  • English speaking — assessed during the eligibility interview conversation
  • English reading — you read aloud one of three sentences (USCIS vocabulary lists on Study for the Test)
  • English writing — you write one of three sentences (same USCIS vocabulary lists)
  • Civics — an oral test; the officer asks questions from the bank that matches your filing-date version

Civics format: officer may stop early

On both the 2008 and 2025 paths, the officer may stop the civics test once you have either passed or failed under the official thresholds:

  • 2008: stop when you reach 6 correct or 5 incorrect
  • 2025: stop when you reach 12 correct or 9 incorrect

You do not need to answer every question in the bank on interview day. You need enough correct answers under the rule for your test version.

Age 65 / 20 years LPR (“65/20”) — brief note

If you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 or more years, USCIS continues a special path: 10 questions from a specially selected bank of 20 (the starred/* questions on the official list for your test version), 6 correct to pass, and you may take the civics test in the language of your choice. Stay calm: short answers that match USCIS wording

  • Listen carefully to the full question before you answer.
  • Prefer short, accepted wording from the official study materials — not a long speech.
  • For dynamic answers (President, Vice President, Speaker, Chief Justice, your Senators / Representative / Governor), use the officials serving at your interview — refresh on Check for Test Updates.
  • If you miss one, keep going. The officer is scoring against the pass/fail thresholds above.
  • Speak clearly; the speaking test is part of the interview conversation for most applicants.
